Is your Life in need of an adjustment?

May 14th 2017 | Julia Becerra. Is your life in need of an adjustment?

Some life changes  are in need of adjustments and  although we may not know it, at a time we actually make that required shift.

Sometimes, I am asked, What things would you like to change in your life or in your day-to-day? For the most part my answer is, to do more of what I am already doing; in other words, I feel that I have already asked myself that question and as a result, I am taking the steps to make  that transformation a reality.

On my mind, no further action is required. Then, on a random day, something happens and I make an unplanned modification -still in the desired direction, but totally unexpected.  How is that? And most importantly do you understand what I mean with this?

Let me explain.  On a given day,  as most of us may do, I have a morning routine: something like early exercise (Yoga, spinning or walking or whatever works at the time), followed by a shower, some coffee etc. As part of it,  I ask “Alexa” to play the news on my area of interest: sport, business, etc.  I see this as an effective use of my time; while I listen to the news, I continue to perform the rest of my morning activities without any interruption but with the added benefit of starting my day “informed”.

I added this “get informed” step to my morning routine sometime last year. I felt adding that step  was putting me on the right mood to start the day. I did not consciously make a note of any changes on my behavior as a result of it.  I later found out that other people around me felt I had “strangely ” turned into a more concerned/stressed out person. But nobody ever mentioned that perception to me.

One day, a few weeks ago, I joined a group of people for a Happy Hour get together. During the course of the evening, Tamika, the event organizer, shared her Jamaican wisdom, by telling the group that every morning, she got up to the sounds of her favorite music and in occasions, she even danced  a little around her apartment while getting ready to go to work .Her eyes lighted up while she happily shared her story.

The conversation then moved to other topics, but her story stayed in the back of my mind.  I realized that long time ago, I used to do something similar and  at the time it was a really cheerful experience.  Something I was looking forward to every day.  A routine that left me in a good spirit to deal with the day ahead.

The day after listening to Tamika’s story, I made the until then unscheduled change: Instead of asking “Alexa” to play the news, I requested it to play music. As a result of that simple adjustment, something shifted on me. I started feeling more relaxed; I was on a cheerful mood for the rest of the morning.

I could mention a good amount of similar stories, like that occasion when I read John Stepper blog ” The most difficult push up ever” ( https://workingoutloud.com/blog/difficult-push-ever) and that triggered another positive subtle change on my life.

I more often than not, hear similar stories from other people. Their stories consistently mention that without consciously looking for changes in their lives, they have suddenly found themselves making them, as a result of either a direct message received through reading, watching a documentary, listening or watching an interview; or through an indirect message received via a movie dialogue, a song, a tweet or a Facebook post for that matter.

How or why does this behavior shift take place? What makes us react positively (although sometimes negatively as well) to a message that otherwise may have gone unnoticed?

Well, for the positive reactions, my theory is that for the most part, deep inside we are unconsciously tuning in to be better selves ; to achieve more peace and satisfaction; to make the best of our lives and to enjoy our time on earth.  We are prepared to do the needed modification, but we may not be consciously aware of this readiness.

Life as structured or unstructured as it can be, it is always changing, reshuffling, readjusting, to keep us on our most desired path.

So if you did not make any new year resolutions,  a goal that you are checking monthly for completion; or if you made them and you are fatefully working to achieve them, just know that in the most unexpected place you can find the trigger element that could impulse you even further, to slightly or to abruptly shift you on the inner desired direction.

Have you experienced any subtle or strong positive shift of behavior of direction on your life as a result of an “unintended” message? What do you think is the reason why something like that takes place?

I would love to hear from you.  In the meantime, following my intuition, I am making a slight shift on my typing an ending this post here.

Thank you for reading my post.
