A Trip Inside The Brain

A true #ADD story.

Jules Heartly | February 2022

I was sitting at the breakfast table listening to the story narrated.   While I was doing it (or I thought I was doing it) I was also paying attention to the birds outside,  they seemed not to care for the rain coming down, as they continued to eat their seeds from the bird feeder as this was a dry summer day.

Amid this, I found myself imagining writing this blog about a book, one that I had casually noticed when I had gone inside to a hotel lobby to ask for directions.  I had wondered if the book was real, I mean, was it only the cover or was it a real book.  Why was it placed there in the lobby? Was it because it was a good book or just as decoration?  And How had the book gotten there in the first place?  Discarded from a local library?  As one of the antique collections of this ancient building? Something of significance to the original hotel owners?  Or merely just something that one of the hotel workers found and thought it would go well with the classic ambiance of the lobby?

As I mentally saw myself typing those words, I was also thinking of the funeral of the fallen #NYPD officers,  the long procession, the sad music and how that encompassed the cover of this old book.  I was also imagining how good it would be to have such a magnificent procession for officers (still alive) who went beyond themselves to perform a good cause.  For officers who were recognized for their outstanding work for the community.  That would probably send a really good message to both the #NYPD and the community they serve. What was the purpose of waiting until they could no longer care if they were recognized or not,  to do such a manifestation of appreciation?

In the middle of these lines of thought, I heard the question.  “So what do you think?”, and just like that I went back to be active in the conversation I was having at breakfast.  I knew a second before, the expression on my face could’ve been that of an absent-minded person.  So before anything else was said, I offered the analogy myself.   “My #brain activity is like that of an active bowling alley”.

There is this lane where some people have been playing for a while, and they are checking the score.  There is this second lane, where a couple is watching the ball going half way still looking like it is going to hit a strike.  There is a third lane where there are four friends having a whole conversation about betting applications while deciding who should go first.  And finally, there is this fourth lane where the ball just got returned back to the bowler, and it is being collected to throw it  again.

I am keeping my brain camera in all of them.   Keeping track of all the activities and at some point lingering a bit in one lane until something else forces me to take action into something that is probably outside of the Bowling Alley.  That is the #ADD(Attention Deficit Disorder) brain.  A bowling alley of thoughts happening in parallel lanes, some getting deeper in their subjects than others, some working harder to prevail.   And some that will be forgotten in the next segment,  in the next game at the bowling alley.

Creativity is a big plus coming out of an #ADHD brain and there are other pluses, but believe me when I say, sometimes I just wish to have a normal brain. I mean a Non-ADD one!
