Covid19-Staycation Blog. WEEK TWO: DAY ELEVEN. Disconnecting From The News and Feeling Good About Social Distancing.

Jules Heartly | March 26th , 2020 –  Day ELEVEN of my day-to-day during Covid19-Mandated life changes.

No News Is Good News For You.

Immersed in the pristine water of my shower, I decided to take a day off.  Not a day off from working, but from listening and watching the news.  I believe we already have enough information about what is Covid19 and what precautions we must take to stop its spread.  We know for a fact that is a worldwide life situation etc. etc.  The words, hospitals at reached capacity, lockdown, #StayHome, #StuckAtHome etc have been said enough times.  So, except for a few updates from the local government office, there was no need to watch or listen to the news for a few days, I decided.

To make it even more effective, I stopped reading most of the messages and posts from social media.  After all, except for a few humorous ones, they were mostly repeating the news or communicating fake ones.

#SocialDistancing for a short time,  while keeping the reason for doing it out of the conversation,  is an interesting experience.  Suddenly one would find oneself talking about subjects you may haven’t discussed for a while and even remembering interests one has forgotten one had, because we have focused the whole attention on the pressing events the news keeps bringing to our minds.  I noticed new online groups and chats forming to discuss all kinds of fascinating subjects, from the history of wine to Quantum physics.  This, for sure, a benefit of the circumstances.

So,  by doing those two things,  staying away from the news and practicing #SocialDistancing, the whole experience of being at home following the “Be cautious” mandate, became a unique experience.  I focused on each activity from an inner state of peace.

For almost a full day, I didn’t think of the #CoronaVirus at all.   I was lucky I didn’t have to go outside to run any essential errand. My morning meditation was a peaceful one instead of a fear-fighting one.  I was able to convey more hope and certainty to the people from my team, which I communicate daily with.  Even cooking my usual meals felt less stressful.  Did any good news from the outside world make this change? No, not really.  It was mostly an attitude change.  A perception change.  The situation with regard to the Pandemic is either the same or worse, but it felt different.  I didn’t feel  I was “trapped” in my house or “stuck” or something like.  I just went through my day doing the things I had planned to do and checking on the people I care about the most, staying focused on each moment every time.

The result?  A most manageable day.  An enjoyable one.  And you may ask, but we may have to stay in this #SocialDistancing situation for many more days, perhaps weeks! And you are right! But don’t we have to live only one day at a time?  If we get to live each day, staying healthy, staying peaceful and hopeful,  we would have successfully accomplished our goal.

Let’s find this #StayHome Activity as an opportunity to live life differently, to do things we didn’t dare to do, things we wanted to do and couldn’t do before, or things that just came out as an idea now, as a result of this time.  I bet a lot of you are already doing so.

And overall, let’s replace the 24/7 News on the pandemic subject with humorous shows, Stand up comedy shows, feel-good movies, hopeful books. Fun board games, cheerful music, awesome podcasts.  You would feel the difference in your body, in your mind, and in your way of living this #stayHome experience.

What things are you enjoying doing now, you never thought you would do this year?

I would love to hear from you.

  1. It’s unbelievable how we share the same feelings with an ocean between us. Here at home we’re behaving the same, so now we’re re-watching Harry Potter saga, in Italian then in English. Not a single Covid19 thought while we’re watching the Howard’s wizards in action. Stay safe

  2. Me uno a la campaña!! Ya tenemos suficiente información y está en nuestras manos tomar la mejor decisión! El pánico a la Muerte, nos hace más vulnerables
